Patchwork & Quilted Pencil Cushion
Patchwork & Quilted Pencil Cushion
Brighten up your sewing room or a little one's bedroom with our Pencil Patchwork Cushion Workshop!
This project is all about celebrating colour and learning the foundations of geometric piecing. It’s a playful, high-impact design that turns simple fabric strips into a row of cheerful, giant colouring pencils.
What You’ll Do
We will focus on the precision and rhythm of strip piecing. You’ll learn how to build these iconic pencil shapes using clever, straightforward techniques. We'll guide you through:
• The "Pencil Point" Technique: Learn the "stitch and flip" method to create perfect triangle points for your pencils without any tricky templates.
• Strip Piecing Mastery: Discover how to sew long, straight seams accurately to ensure your row of pencils stays perfectly aligned.
• Creative Quilting: Once your "pencil box" is pieced, we’ll "sandwich" it with wadding and backing. You’ll learn how to add vertical quilting lines to enhance the pencil shape and add that lovely tactile finish.
• Cushion Construction: We’ll finish the day by turning your quilted panel into a professional envelope-back cushion cover, ready to fit a standard 45cm (18") pad at home.
What’s Included
• Full use of our studio sewing machines, including specialist patchwork feet.
• All cutting equipment: Professional rotary cutters, mats, and quilting rulers.
• Premium Wadding to give your quilted cover that beautiful structure and "loft."
• A library of colourful threads to match every pencil in your set.
• Plenty of tea, coffee, and cake to keep the creative energy high!
What to Bring
This workshop is the perfect excuse to use your most vibrant scraps! Please bring:
• A Rainbow of Scraps: Bring a selection of colourful fabric strips (at least 10cm wide) for your pencil bodies. We will have some you can use here too.
• The "Lead" and "Wood" Fabrics: Small scraps of black/grey for the pencil tips and a light beige or tan for the sharpened wood area.
• Background & Backing Fabric: Approx. 1 metre of a neutral fabric (like white or light grey) to act as your background and to create the envelope back.
It’s joyful, colourful, and a great confidence-builder. You’ll leave with a finished, 45cm (18") quilted pencil cushion cover, ready to be stuffed and enjoyed.
