Glaze Mixology Course
Exploring the Art and Science of Glaze Creation
Ceramic glaze mixology is a fascinating blend of artistry and chemistry, offering potters the opportunity to experiment with colour, texture, and finish.
The course introduces the fundamental ingredients of glazes, including silica, alumina, and fluxes, and explains how each contributes to the final outcome.
Students will learn to measure and mix raw materials accurately, ensuring safe handling and consistency throughout the process.
Firstly, we will make clay test tiles which will be bisque fired ready for your glazes.
You will be given a folder with glaze experiment sheets to record all your findings!
Through a series of practical sessions, you will discover how to adjust recipes to achieve different effects—from glossy to matte finishes, and from subtle earth tones to vibrant hues.
The course also covers the importance of firing temperatures, kiln atmospheres, and how these variables impact glaze behaviour.
By the end, participants will be equipped to develop their own unique glaze formulas, fostering creative exploration and technical confidence.
Following this course, you can further experiment with alchemy in our 'Glaze Inspiration Course'.
After completing the course you will be a full member of our Glaze Club which means you can access the materials and tools to mix your own glazes.
This workshop is for beginners or those that are already on their ceramic journey who want a practical course on how to make glazes.
9th August 2026 10-4pm, then 20/8 and 27/8 6-8pm £85 including all materials and firing.
