Beginners Patchwork & Quilting
Beginners Patchwork & Quilting: The "First Panel" Workshop
Have you always wanted to make a quilt but didn’t know where to start? This workshop is the perfect entry point. Instead of committing to a massive project, you’ll focus on creating one beautiful Quilted Panel. It’s the ultimate "sampler" project that teaches you every core skill of quilting in a single, satisfying day.
What You’ll Do
We break the quilting process down into simple, manageable steps. By focusing on one 18" (45cm) square panel, you’ll have the time to master:
• Rotary Cutting 101: Learn to use a rotary cutter and quilting ruler to get those perfectly straight edges that make sewing a breeze.
• The "Golden" Seam: Master the 1/4-inch seam allowance—the foundation of all quilting. Get this right, and your blocks will always line up!
• The Quilt Sandwich: Learn how to "sandwich" your patchwork top with wadding and backing fabric using professional basting techniques.
• Intro to Machine Quilting: Discover how to use your sewing machine to stitch through the layers, adding that classic "crinkle" and tactile texture.
• Squaring & Binding: Learn how to trim your panel and sew on a professional fabric border (binding) for a clean, gallery-ready finish.
What’s Included
• Full use of our studio sewing machines, including patchwork and walking feet.
• All cutting equipment: Professional rotary cutters, self-healing mats, and rulers.
• Premium Wadding: Everything you need to give your panel that cosy, quilted feel.
• Plenty of tea, coffee, and cake to keep the creative energy high!
What to Bring
• A handful of "Fat Quarters": 3 or 4 of your favourite patterned fabrics. We will have some fabrics you can use here too.
• Background & Backing: 0.5 metres of a neutral background fabric and 0.5 metres for the back of your panel.
• Thread: A spool of quality 100% cotton thread in a neutral colour (like cream or grey).
It’s approachable, encouraging, and totally addictive. You’ll leave with a finished quilted panel—perfect as a wall hanging or table topper—and the confidence to start your next project at home.
