Beginners Knitting 4 Week Course
Learn to knit from the very beginning. No experience needed.
Across four friendly, confidence‑building sessions, you’ll learn all the essential techniques of right‑handed, English‑style knitting. Each workshop builds on the last, so by the end you’ll have the skills to tackle simple patterns with ease.
If you’d like a project to practise on, you can knit a scarf or a hat alongside the course, using every technique you learn.
Workshop 1 Getting Started: Needles, Yarn & Your First Stitches
Perfect for complete beginners.
You’ll learn:
- How to comfortably hold your needles and yarn
- How to manage tension so your stitches look even
- How to cast on using a simple, reliable method
- Your very first stitch: the knit stitch
By the end of this session, you’ll be able to knit a small swatch and feel confident handling your materials.
Workshop 2 Building Confidence: Knit, Purl & Combining Stitches
Now that you’ve met the basics, we’ll expand your toolkit.
You’ll learn:
- The purl stitch and how it pairs with knit
- How to switch between knit and purl in the same row
- How to recognise your stitches and spot simple mistakes
You’ll practise creating simple textures like garter stitch and stocking stitch.
Workshop 3 Shaping Your Work: Increasing & Decreasing
This is where your knitting starts to take shape, literally.
You’ll learn:
- How to increase stitches
- How to decrease stitches
- How shaping is used in patterns to form curves and structure
- How to keep your tension consistent as you learn new techniques
Workshop 4 Reading Patterns & Finishing Techniques
Your final session brings everything together.
You’ll learn:
- How to read and understand a basic knitting pattern
- Common abbreviations and how to follow row‑by‑row instructions
- How to cast off neatly
- How to finish your work: seaming, weaving in ends, and blocking
- How to choose your next project with confidence
After the Workshops: Optional Next Steps
If you’re excited to keep going, in our weekly sessions we’ll introduce optional extra techniques such as:
- Simple cables
- Colour changes and striped knitting
These are perfect for anyone who wants to build on their new skills at a relaxed pace.
