Learn to Crochet from the Very Beginning

No experience needed.
Across four friendly, confidence-building sessions, you’ll learn the essential techniques of crochet using UK terminology. Each workshop builds on the last, so by the end you’ll have the skills to tackle simple patterns with ease.
If you’d like a project to practise on, you can crochet a scarf (working in rows) or a beanie (working in rounds) alongside the course, using every technique you learn.

Workshop 1 – Getting Started: Hooks, Yarn & Your First Loops
Perfect for complete beginners.
You’ll learn:
  • How to comfortably hold your hook and yarn.
  • How to make a slip knot and your first foundation chain.
  • How to manage tension so your stitches look even.
  • Your very first stitch: the double crochet (dc).
Result: By the end of this session, you’ll be able to crochet a small swatch and feel confident handling your tools.
Workshop 2 – Building Height: Taller Stitches & Straight Edges
Now that you’ve met the basics, we’ll expand your toolkit.
You’ll learn:
  • The treble crochet (tr) and half-treble (htr) stitches.
  • The secret to "turning chains" so your edges stay straight.
  • How to recognise the top of your stitches and spot simple mistakes.
Result: You’ll practise creating different textures and learn how to keep your work from growing or shrinking accidentally.
Workshop 3 – Shaping Your Work: Rounds, Increases & Decreases
This is where your crochet starts to take shape, literally.
You’ll learn:
  • How to work in the round (the foundation for hats and granny squares).
  • How to increase and decrease stitches to create curves and structure.
  • How to use the slip stitch to join pieces or finish rounds.
Result: You’ll understand how to move beyond simple squares into 3D shapes.
Workshop 4 – Reading Patterns & Finishing Techniques
Your final session brings everything together.
You’ll learn:
  • How to read a crochet pattern and understand UK abbreviations.
  • How to spot the difference between UK and US patterns so you never get caught out.
  • How to fasten off neatly and weave in your ends securely.
  • How to choose your next project and the right yarn with confidence.

After the Workshops: Optional Next Steps
If you’re excited to keep going, join our weekly social sessions where we’ll introduce:
  • The classic Granny Square.
  • Changing colours and basic stripes.
  • Textured stitches like bobbles or ribbing.
